Davenport Dogs

I love these mutts on a house here in Davenport Road, Durban.
11 November

Well, how'd you do, Private William McBride?
Do you mind if I sit here down by your graveside?
I'll rest here awhile in the warm summer sun,
I've been walking all day, Lord, and I'm nearly done.
And I see by your gravestone you were only 19
When you joined the glorious fallen in 1916--
Well, I hope you died quick and I hope you died clean,
Or, Willie McBride, was it slow and obscene?

Did they beat the drum slowly,
Did they sound the fife lowly,
Did the rifles fire o'er you as they lowered you down?
Did the bugles sing "The Last Post" in chorus?
Did the pipes play "The Flowers of the Forest?"

The Joost & Amor Soap Opera

So Joost has confessed that it is indeed he who stars in that sex video. Then we have Amor - the humiliated wife - telling all on some talk radio show. But as it is radio there has to be a photo of her on the front page of the local rags showing her tears as she shares all.

Emotional and tragic stuff....or is it? All seemed to be timed to mark the launch of Joost's 'tell all' book. It makes not only me cynical but others too. So have a look here for another take on the very public lives of Joost and Amor. Joost needs absolution. Amor needs sympathy. Money from the book sales is the panacea.

The 'Springboks' go Down

Last night's game was a dismal affair from a Saffer point of view. Here we have a team made up of many players who can't make the starting line-up for their province - and they are billed as 'Springboks.' Even the Captain of this rag tag bunch sits on the bench for the Blue Bulls and has hardly played more a few minutes at the end of recent games. The result? He gets buckled in the front rank and has to leave the field after 20 minutes. I could go on....

Oh let's not dwell on our bizarre selection methods dictated by race and politics. The only light moment of the evening was the commentary comment by Bob Skinstad when he said 'The whole of South Africa breathes a sigh of relief when Earl Rose comes up with the ball and does something decent with it.'
