Happy Birthday South Africa
Today is the 31st day of May; a very important day in the history of South Africa. The day on which the Anglo-Boer War ended. The day on which two British Colonies and two Boer Republics became one as the 'Union of South Africa'. The day on which South Africa became a Republic in 1961.
Of course it will pass without note because South Africa has adopted 1994 as its foundation myth date.
I note too that Kings House here in Durban has been renamed after Albert Luthuli. (his name used again!) The reason given is to make our history more 'inclusive' Bearing in mind the amnesia over things pre 1994 I say that the current spin is now excluding events and people who have made this country what it is; providing the framework within which others can play their part, excel and be also be remembered.
Let us be less myopic and remember the vast sweep of our history including the 31 May. Therefore 'Happy Birthday South Africa'
